This one came to my attention while reading somewhere that "Lupin III" creator Monkey Punch had claimed that the dynamic between Lupin and his buddy Daisuke Jigen was akin to that between Delon and Bronson in this film, and that connection certainly comes across (both play decommissioned Foreign Legionaries, with Bronson's constant declarations of "Yeah!" telegraphing his 'Muhricaness with all the subtlety of a jackhammer).

Scripted by noted crime novelist Sébastien Japrisot (who also wrote another of Bronson's French efforts, "Rider on the Rain", as well as Just Jaeckin's adaptation of "Story of O"), the film's middle section sees the pair trapped with a safe over a Christmas long weekend - if you've ever wanted to see two of the manliest men in cinema get greasy and shirtless as they try to figure out the combination, you're in luck. Once they discover that they're about to be framed for robbery and murder, their insistence upon not snitching to anyone - especially Bernard Fresson's tenacious Inspector - about what they really did and saw over those three days becomes an amusing and engaging narrative hook, all while they try to find out what icy Olga Georges-Picot and radiant Brigitte Fossey's roles in this mess are. - Patrick Moroney

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0890/2138/2947/files/enhanced-matte-paper-poster-_in_-8x10-front-6ab80dfb248bd.jpg?v=1791671320
