This lively, sleazy, sunbaked neo-noir stands at an interesting crossroads - it's a rare film of this era that's completely unashamed of the derivative elements and connections weaved into its tapestry (in this case, "Double Indemnity" and "Bonnie & Clyde"), while its unique elements proved influential on others, most notably Tarantino. (Ever wondered why Jimmie's wife in "Pulp Fiction" is named Bonnie and is never shown onscreen? Well, it's because of this movie.) What's especially Tarantino-esque is the witty, rapid-fire scriptwork by director Arthur Marks (formerly the most prominent helmer of TV's "Perry Mason") and his confident handling of its cast of higher-end B-regulars, with enjoyable turns by Alex Rocco (Roger Meyers Jr. himself!) and Timothy Brown as proto-Vince and Jules enforcers, Corman regular Leo Gordon as a particularly gross stepdad, and Steve Sandor as the dopey fall guy. Naturally, it's all anchored by Tiffany Billing (one of the most intense and unnerving leading ladies of her era - check out her turn in the Marks-produced "The Candy Snatchers") and Robin Mattson as our amoral titular siblings, Ellie and Myra. Surprisingly, despite their credible chemistry, the narrative splits the duo up relatively early on - and it's Myra's portion of the narrative that makes us say, for better or for worse, "They sure don't make 'em like they used to" (such as her utterly unhinged threat against her aunt Diana to out her lesbianism - a scene that, by today's standards, makes us hate her more than was perhaps intended). - Patrick Moroney
