Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion Unisex Tank Top.
"Lady Snowblood" might be the more famous of the two Meiko Kaji revenge movie franchises that inspired "Kill Bill", but the first of the "Female Prisoner Scorpion" films is, for me, what truly captured her singular qualities as a star. Her choice to deliberately strip away much of her dialogue - not unlike how Clint Eastwood approached his portrayal of the Man with No Name - particularly demonstrates the kind of restraint and discipline rarely found in movie stars. For Kaji, a sustained look is more than enough to convey Matsu's anguish and rage against the men and women who try to stop her from enacting her vengeance against the Yakuza who violated her, and the corrupt cop who manipulated her into their crosshairs.
Add to this brew a number of spectacular stylistic choices from first-time director Shunya Itō (kabuki shower fight and random references to the Japanese flag, much?) and Kaji's sarcastic, bittersweet performance of the immortal theme song ("Urami-Bushi"), and you have - Abel Ferrara's "Ms .45" notwithstanding - one of the grindhouse's most extraordinary odes to the fury of scorned women. - Patrick Moroney
