In 2017, the Brisbane Festival and the Gallery of Modern Art hosted their "Gothic, Giallo, Gore: Masters of Italian Horror" retrospective. It was at these life-changing screenings that I took in my first Bava movies, as well as my first Argento flick (a showing of "Suspiria" with Claudio Simonetti and Goblin performing the score live!) and this one - my first Fulci. A gonzo take on the culture clash between Old England and the acid-soaked final days of Swinging London, it remains as good a place as any to start with his filmography, bridging the psychedelic sexiness and seedy clandestineness of "One on Top of the Other" with the shock-and-awe elements of his later zombie and Lovecraftian horror epics, with Elio Petri's regular cinematographer Luigi Kuveiller and special effects maestro Carlo Rambaldi both offering up fine work (just make sure to brace yourself if you're a dog lover, though).
This is also the film that made me a fan of its star, Florinda Bolkan, for life: she's incredibly captivating as the prim, proper and pent-up Carol, and her "dreams" involving murder victim Julia (played by a strangely uncredited yet stunning Anita Strindberg) are nothing short of mesmerising, especially when paired with Ennio Morricone's lush score. (As a random bit of trivia, I've recently learned that the mad Irish hippie who tries to claim credit for Julia's murder was, in fact, the first film role for Robert Coleby, who has since become one of the most steadily-employed British thesps here in the Southeast Queensland arts scene.) - Patrick Moroney
