She's possibly best known for being satirized by Fellini as "Marilù Traversi" - a starlet with few qualities other than a big hairdo that matches her bosom - in "Toby Dammit". And while her romances with Valentino and Dario Argento, as well a memorable anecdote from her frequent co-star Brett Halsey, certainly point to her capacity for playing the tabloids like a fiddle, I find that while Tolo was certainly quite diva-ish (she's definitely a gesticulator), she was also nonetheless sincerely committed to her craft, and was especially aided in this regard by her highly expressive eyes.
Although she's certainly an asset in good films ranging from Giulio Questi's "Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot!" (where she gets visibily aroused by her boyfriend and the local preacher pawing over stolen gold) to Damiano Damiani's "Confessions of a Police Captain" (where her character goes through hell only to meet a sticky end), I find her especially memorable in Mario Bava's otherwise wonky Spaghetti Western satire "Roy Colt & Winchester Jack", where she plays the Fujiko Mine-esque con-woman Manila - who ultimately bests the title characters in their collective search for gold - with a no-nonsense sensuality. (As an aside, I also suspect that Tolo, despite not being mentioned as such in interviews, was an influence on the characterisation of Lorenza Izzo's portrayal of Francesca Capucci in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".) - Patrick Moroney
