As legendary as the cinematography and effects are in "Zombi 2" and the "Gates of Hell" trilogy, I tend to gravitate towards the earlier genre efforts in Lucio Fulci's filmography, and this, his first giallo, is a high watermark - kudos to Mondo Macabro for putting the extra legwork into assembling a complete cut of this movie for their Blu-ray all those years ago. Benefiting from an engaging take on the "Double Indemnity" insurance scam formula mixed with some social commentary on capital punishment, this one has a fine cast, ranging from Jean Sorel's glory-hunting doctor being knocked down from his pedestal to such an extent that you almost feel sorry for him, to the ever-slimy Alberto De Mendoza giving an exposition dump that marks him as the author of all of Jean's pain.
But of course, all that is white noise compared to Marisa Mell, who, in her character's guise as Monica Weston, the flaxen-haired stripper goddess of San Francisco, alternates between reacting to the sexual clumsiness of her prospective clients with endearing ditziness, and yawning like a sleepy lioness who's all too aware of her power and presence in this erotic jungle. Naturally, when I was watching this movie for the first time, my mother walked in on THAT scene between Mell and Elsa Martinelli (who's also excellent as Sorel's stoic yet long-suffering photographer girlfriend).
