As with many things in my life over the last few years, Tim Lucas illuminated many of the qualities that make "Spirits of the Dead" so fascinating as an anthology of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations through his book on the film, published as part of PS Publishing's "Midnight Movie Monographs" series. But it is the penultimate scene in Fellini's segment, "Toby Dammit", where Terence Stamp's title character loudly declares his intention to drive across a chasm to where a devilish little girl with a white ball is waiting for him, that lingers in both his analysis and his recollection of the crossroads in his life during which he saw the film for the first time. And it was this line that similarly resonated with me when translating the sequences in Cristiana Astori's "All That Black" that reference this hair-raising finale, whether it be in scenes where the sequence is openly discussed, or when it subtly serves as the psychological backdrop for the book's own climax.
